The CAiSE Industrial track was held on the last day of the CAiSE conference, just after the Keynote
presentation by Ricardo Baeza-Yates. The CAISE Industrial was conceived to provide practitioners with
an opportunity to publish experience reports of potential interest to the researcher and practitioner
communities. The track was organized by Yves Pigneur from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland;
Gil Regev from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Itecor, Switzerland; and Vicente
Pelechano from Universidad Politécnica de Valencia.

This volume contains the papers presented at the CAiSE Industry Paper Session and an extended
summary of the two panels that were conducted after the paper session.

    <sec id="sec-2">

The paper session included four presentations:

Maria José Escalona presented the paper titled “Agile in Public Administration: Oxymoron or reality? An
experience report” co-authored with Carlos Torrecilla-Salinas, Jorge Sedeño and Manuel Mejías.
The paper reported on two projects that introduced agile methods in public administration. Quite
interestingly, both projects exhibited over estimation of the work needed to complete them.
Antonella Poggi presented the paper titled “Ontology-Based Data Access: The experience at the Italian
Department of Treasury” co-authored with Natalia Antonioli, Francesco Castanò, Cristina Civili, Spartaco
Coletta, Stefano Grossi, Domenico Lembo, Maurizio Lenzerini, Domenico Fabio Savo and Emanuela
Virardi.

The authors created a new graphical ontology language to design an ontology collaboratively with experts
in a public administration resulting a kind of a light entity relationship diagram. The researchers report
that the method can be used in other contexts but much time is needed to build the ontology through
interviews.

Maria José Escalona presented a second paper titled “Applying model-driven paradigm: CALIPSOneo
experience” co-authored with Julian Garcia-Garcia, Fernando Mas, Manuel Oliva and Carmelo Del Valle.
The paper discusses the use of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) for Product Lifecycle Management in
the aeronautics industry. It reports that introducing MDE in companies can be quite difficult.
Andreas Eberhardt presented the paper titled “Transformation of IT systems – socially acceptable,
efficient, successful co-authored with Pierre-Yves Cloux.

The authors describe two Paradoxes where IT is essential for companies but is continually challenged on
cost and where IT legacy is viewed as negative whereas in other domains legacy is often positive. This
results in often rushed outsourcing initiatives. The authors propose a more planned IT strategy where only
what is necessary is outsourced while complying with ethical and political constraints.

The three first papers describe collaborations between research and practice. They are akin to action
research in which the researchers immerse themselves in practice, reporting back what they have
observed. The fourth paper is the result of a different approach. It is the work of two practitioners who
reflected on the practice prevalent in their industry and formulated alternative courses of action, with no
connexion with research.

In the panel session two panel were organized:

Gil Regev organized the panel entitled: “The relationship between IS research and industry. What do they
learn from one another?” whose main objective was to explore the relationship between IS research and
industry, analyze what they can learn from one another and try to formulate ideas for more knowledge
transfer between them.

Tanja Vos and Nelly Condori-Fernández organized the panel entitled: “Successful Empirical Research in
Software Testing with Industry” whose main objective was to provide answers to the the following
question: Why is it so difficult to introduce software testing research into testing practice?. In the panel
this question was answered by identifying obstacles and challenges from two different perspectives:
Industry and Academy.
