Preface These proceedings contain the papers of the First International Workshop on Recent Trends in News Information Retrieval (NewsIR’16) held in conjunction with the ECIR 2016 conference in Padua, Italy, on the 20th of March 2016. Nine full papers and three short papers were selected by the programme committee from a total of 19 submissions. Each submitted paper was reviewed by at least three members of an international programme committee. In addition to the selected papers, the workshop features two keynote speeches. Keynote speeches are given by Jochen Leidner “Recent Advances in Information Access at Thomson Reuters R&D: News and Beyond”, and Julio Gonzalo “Monitoring Reputation in the Wild Online West”. We would like to thank ECIR for hosting us. Thanks also go to the keynote speakers, the program committee, the paper authors, and the participants, for without these people there would be no workshop. Miguel Martinez, Signal Media Ltd.
