Foreword

We welcome all of you to the twenty-seventh annual Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive
Science Conference (MAICS 2016), held in April 22-23, 2016 at the University of Dayton in
Dayton, Ohio. MAICS 2016 is hosted by the Department of Computer Science, University of
Dayton. In keeping the tradition of MAICS, the conference brings together undergraduate and
graduate students, junior and senior faculty, and industry researchers to present and exchange ideas
related to various topics in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. This years conference
includes special topics on CyberSecurity applications and machine learning for CyberSecurity,
enhancing the variety of interesting new topics for you to encounter.
The MAICS 2016 program committee has 33 members in different areas of expertise. We have
received submissions on relevant subjects that represent new results or research in progress, all of
which were reviewed by two or more referees. After a thorough review and discussion process,
MAICS 2106 accepted 13 full papers and a short paper. Most of the accepted papers received three
reviews with extended comments, recommendations, and suggested improvements. Our deepest
appreciation goes to the program committee for their invaluable contributions to make this confer-
ence successful.
The success of the conference depends on many others who contributed to it. We thank each
keynote speaker for giving a talk and sharing their expertise with the conference attendees. We also
extend our sincerest gratitude to the student volunteers and the faculty and staff of the Department
of Computer Science at the University of Dayton, especially Dr. Mehdi Zargham (chair) and Ms.
Denise Brown (senior administrative assistant), who have helped us with many matters. We also
thank the College of Arts and Science at the University of Dayton for providing financial support
through the Dean’s Office, and the University of Dayton for hosting the conference.

We hope you will all enjoy the conference, engage in lively and productive discussions and that
MAICS will continue to be a success for many years to come.
