This document contains the papers presented at MLSA16, which is the third workshop on Machine Learning and Data Mining for Sports Analytics. The workshop was held at the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases 2016 in Riva del Garda, Italy and took place on Monday 19 September 2016. Based on the reviews, 15 papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop. The slides of the workshop presentations are available for download from the workshop website: http://dtai.cs.kuleuven.be/events/MLSA16/. We are grateful to the authors, the program committee members, and the reviewers for their time and e orts. We would also like to thank the workshop and tutorial chairs, Matthijs van Leeuwen, Fabrizio Costa and Albrecht Zimmermann, as well as the conference organizers, Andrea Passerini, Fosca Giannotti, Paolo Frasconi, Niels Landwehr, Giuseppe Manco and Jilles Vreeken.
