Program Chairs’ addresses:
Ontology is a cross-disciplinary field concerning the study of concepts and theories that
support the building of shared conceptualizations of specific domains. The study of ontologies
has been assisting in the problem solution in as diverse areas as Computer Science,
Information Science, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistic, Knowledge Management.
Particularly, it is being largely used for information capturing and organization in many areas
of Science and Industry and applications. The Seminar on Ontology Research in Brazil,
ONTOBRAS, foresees an opportunity and scientific environment in which researchers and
practitioners from Information Sciences and Computer Science can discuss the theories,
methodologies, languages, tools and experiences related to ontologies development and
application.

The tenth edition of ONTOBRAS, hosted in Brasilia, Brazil, was organized by the Catholic
University of Brasilia (UCB), National University of Brasilia (UNB) and Federal University
of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). We would like to deeply thanks the sponsors of this year
edition of ONTOBRAS, namely, The International Association for Ontology and its
Applications (IAOA), the CAPES Foundation, from the Brazilian Federal Government, and
the Foundation of Research Support of Distrito Federal of Brazil (FAPDF).

Researchers and practitioners were invited to submit theoretical, technical and practical
research contributions that directly or indirectly address ontology theory [s1]and application
issues. The call for papers was open for two categories of submissions: papers describing
original work with clearly demonstrated results to be presented in ONTOBRAS main track,
and reports of ongoing thesis and dissertation to be presented in the Workshop of Thesis and
Dissertations on Ontology. We had received 27 paper submissions for the ONTOBRAS and
8 reports for the WTDO. The program committee composed by 22 researchers from Brazil
and Europe and 6 sub-reviewers had chosen the best 8 papers for half-hour oral presentation
and another 8 articles for poster presentation. In the WTDO track, 7 papers were selected to
be presented in a special session with participation of 8 examiners from Brazilian PhD
programs.

The content in this volume is thus constituted by 16 papers and 7 thesis and dissertation
reports. They provide meaningful insights to start additional research in ontology theory and
applications. We thank the authors for their submissions and the program committee for their
hard work. We are also grateful for the academic Julia Eidelwein for the organization of this
volume.
