Foreword       We  are  pleased  to  introduce  the  proceedings  for  the  28th  Modern  Artificial   Intelligence  and  Cognitive  Science  conference  (MAICS  2017),  hosted  at  Indiana   University  –  Purdue  University  Fort  Wayne  (IPFW)  from  April  28-‐29.       A  conference  such  as  this  could  not  have  been  organized  successfully  without  the   help  of  many  people  and  organizations.  First,  we  must  thank  IPFW’s  Office  of  the   Vice  Chancellor  for  Academic  Affairs,  and  the  Institute  for  Research  Scholarship,  and   Creative  Endeavors,  for  their  extremely  generous  financial  support  of  this   conference.  Their  support  allowed  us  to  offer  more  opportunities  for  students  and   junior  faculty  opportunities  to  participate  in  this  conference.  Many  of  these  students   have  come  up  to  us  personally,  sincerely  thanking  us  for  allowing  them  to   participate  in  this  conference  and  being  introduced  to  the  exciting  world  of   academic  research.     We  also  wish  to  thank  the  IPFW  Sigma  Xi  chapter,  and  the  IPFW  computer  science   department,  for  their  financial  support.       The  little  details  matter  tremendously  in  planning  events  like  these,  and  those   details  were  meticulously  taken  care  of  by  Makaylia  Rosebrock,  an  IPFW   undergraduate  student  who  worked  for  months  to  help  plan  the  conference.       We  thank  our  speakers,  Dr.  Selmer  Bringsjord  and  Dr.  John  E.  Hummel,  for  not  only   giving  highly  engaging  and  fascinating  talks,  but  for  participating  in  a  panel   discussion  that  will  be  remembered  for  years  to  come.       Finally,  thanks  again  to  all  of  our  program  committee  members,  particularly  Michael   Glass,  who  went  above  and  beyond  his  responsibilities  as  a  program  committee   member.  These  proceedings  were  compiled  by  Michael,  and  he  offered  us  lots  of   helpful  advice  that  made  organizing  this  conference  much  easier.         Dr.  John  Licato   Dr.  Aleshia  Hayes   MAICS  2017  Conference  Chairs
