      <abstract>
        <p>Conceptual modelling is a process aiming at abstracting some aspects of the real world and representing them in the form of a model that can be used for understanding and communication, often eventually leading to the development of computerised information systems. One of the unique and valuable dimensions of the International Conference on Conceptual Modeling series is the way it brings researchers and practitioners from around the world to discuss advances and to raise new challenges in the eld. The series has been held at an interesting variety of locations, rotating in successive years among Europe, Asia, and the Americas, attracting a diverse international community of scholars. This traction has had a profound e ect that is noticeable in the maturity of the eld and in the amount of novel approaches and results that are produced every year. The 36th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2017) was held in Valencia, Spain, on November 6{9, 2017. The ER Forum 2017 and the ER 2017 joint Demos session o ered a platform for presenting and discussing novel research ideas addressing any of the conference topics as well as new emerging topics related to the conceptual modeling eld. In these tracks, innovation prevailed over maturity. The main goal was to facilitate the interaction, discussion and exchange of ideas among presenters and participants. The response to the call for papers was very positive. During the peer-review process, each submission received at least three reviews by an international Program Committee. The nal decisions by the track chairs yielded a competitive 31.87% acceptance rate. The accepted papers can be grouped into several topical areas, including the process of modelling, data storage and modelling, the application of modelling to speci c domains, extensions to conceptual modelling, innovative approaches, and demos. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who helped to make the ER Forum 2017 and ER Demos 2017 tracks a success. It required the signi cant e orts of many people to make this event possible. We thank the international Program Committee members who thoroughly reviewed and discussed the submissions, and we especially thank the authors who took the time to carefully write up the results of their research and submit papers for consideration. The quality of these papers is a tribute to the authors and also to the reviewers who guided any necessary improvement. Last but not least, we would like to thank the rest of the Organising Committee members of the ER 2017 conference and the local organisers from Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, for their support.</p>
