SEBD 2017 preface Preface This volume collects the papers selected for presentation at the twenty-fifth Italian Symposium on Advanced Database Systems (SEBD 2017), held at Squillace Lido (Catanzaro), Italy, at Sun Beach Clubesse from the 25th to the 29th of June 2017. The first edition of SEBD was held in 1993 and was very successful. Hence, the organizers were encouraged to repeat the experience year after year, until the symposium has became THE annual event of the Italian database research community. Database research played a crucial role for the growth of the computer science field since its early stage. When the first edition of SEBD was organized, the demands placed on the classical relational database systems already required new solutions to answer challenges posed by emerging applications. Twenty-five years later, we can say that, thanks to the solutions found so far, databases became a fundamental component of almost every computer science system, but new challenges continuously arise that actually lead to the Big-Data paradigm that is nowadays of great interest for both the research community and the industry. However, even in this new paradigm, database related research issues play a fundamental role. Indeed Data mining and knowledge Discovery, Information Extraction, Semistructured Data Management and Intelligent Web Information Systems to cite a few, can be considered today as mature research fields whose results are fundamental in order to realize the Big Data metaphor. All these research field are addressed by the papers published in this volume. Fifty- seven contributions were originally submitted, of which forty-three have been accepted. Each submission was evaluated by three independent referees. Most of the contributions came from universities and the CNR (Italian National Research Council). We hope that SEBD will continue to be a gathering forum where people from academic and industrial environments meet, discuss and exchange experiences on the theory and practice of information storage and management. Besides paper and demo presentations, the program also featured four invited talks by Serge Abiteboul, Ronald Fagin, Floris Geerts and Carlo Zaniolo, and two tutorials given by Sihem Amer-Yahia and Pierangela Samarati. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers and all the conference partici- pants. We are also grateful to the members of the Program Committee and the external referees for their thorough work in reviewing submitted contributions with expertise and patience, and the members of the SEBD Steering Committee. A special thank is due to all the members of the Organizing Committee which made this event possible. We gratefully acknowledge the many sponsoring companies and institutions and the patronage of DIMES - Università della Calabria and ICAR-CNR.
