      <abstract>
        <p>We assembled the technical program to give young researchers, especially PhD students, an opportunity to present their research ideas in a prestigious international research venue. The resulting program, we believe, presents a clear sample of emerging topics in database research that included contributions from young researchers across the world. Following the tradition of this workshop series, the program also included a keynote talk and a panel that allowed one-an-one interaction between the Ph.D. students and the established senior researchers in the community. This year, the keynote was presented by Xin Luna Dong (Amazon) on "Challenges and Innovations in Building a Product Knowledge Graph" and the panel was composed by Marta Mattoso (COPPE/UFRJ), Tamer Özsu (University of Waterloo), and Sihem Amer-Yahia (Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble) and was moderated by Senjuti Basu Roy (New Jersey Institute of Technology), one of the workshop chairs. We, the chairs, are very grateful to Jian Pei and Sihem Amer-Yahia, the VLDB PC chairs, who trusted us this important and honoring role. Our heartfelt acknowledgement goes to Fabio Porto, Alberto Laender and Marco Casanova, the General Chairs, as well as the whole local organizing team, for the support and help. Finally, we would like to thank the reviewers who did a woulderfull job in writing constructive comments and selecting the papers. We wish all the participants the very best with their research! Last, but not the least, the workshop had organized its own social event this year. We would like to acknowledge Sharad Mehrotra and Michael Carey for leading this effort and NSF for its generous financial support that allowed us to arrange a welcome breakfast, served exclusively for the PhD Workshop attendees. We believe the event had given excellent opportunities to share and exchange research ideas between the researchers and promoted synergistic collaboration. 2018 VLDB Ph.D. Workshop Program Committee</p>
