Preface

This CEUR volume contains the contributions accepted for
presentation at the Doctoral Consortium (DC) of the 17th International
Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA
2018) held in Trento, Italy, on the 21st and 22nd November 2018.
The Doctoral Consortium was designed for students enrolled either in
a Ph.D. program or in a Ms. program interested in doctoral studies.

We accepted two types of contributions:

   1. Ph.D. overview (recommended for students in an early stage of
the Ph.D.) describes the overall objectives and contributions of
the thesis w.r.t. the state of the art, the methodology and the
      evaluation plan;
   2. Scientific achievement is an extended abstract that describes
some specific scientific results obtained during the Ph.D.
      course.

The Consortium provided students with the opportunity to present
their research directions in the field of Artificial Intelligence and to be
involved in state-of-the-art research through discussion sessions.
Each student was also mentored by a senior researcher with
experience in the domain of the thesis work, who provided feedback
both on the submitted paper and on the oral presentation.
Personalized feedback sessions were organized during the event.

This year ten research papers were selected to be included in the
proceedings: nine Ph.D. overviews and one scientific contribution.
Each extended abstract was subject to reviews by two or three
members of the Program Committee, plus one of the students that
submitted a paper to the Doctoral Consortium. Each paper was
assigned 15 minutes for presentation, and allocated a stand in the
poster session.

We would like to thank all the people involved in the organization of
the event: the AI*IA Conference Chair, Paolo Traverso, and the
Program Chairs Chiara Ghidini, Bernardo Magnini and Andrea
Passerini, who provided support and advice throughout the event
organization; the Program Committee members, who took care of the
reviews and participated in the event, in particular the mentors for
their outstanding support; all the Ph.D. students who submitted their
work to the Doctoral Consortium; the AI*IA association for supporting
the Doctoral Consortium; Springer for funding the prize for the AI*IA
2018 Best Doctoral Consortium Paper Award.
