Democratizing Data Science and Lessons Learned Along the Way Aditya Parameswaran (UC Berkeley) Abstract The talk will cover our multi-year research agenda on democratizing data science, including the development of scalable spreadsheet tools, and interactive visualization search and recommendation tools. I will discuss how we arrived at this research agenda. I will also discuss roadblocks in my career and for this research agenda -- and, specifically, rejections, rejections, and more rejections -- and how I handled them, with help from colleagues and students. Bio Aditya Parameswaran is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Aditya works on systems and algorithms for "human-in-the-loop" data analytics. Until last year, Aditya was an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He spent a year as a PostDoc at MIT CSAIL following his PhD at Stanford University. Aditya has received a number of awards, most notable being the SIGMOD 2020 Best Paper Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the VLDB Early Career Research Contributions Award, the ARO Young Investigator Program Award, the NSF CAREER Award, the TCDE Rising Star Award, and multiple "best" doctoral dissertation awards (from SIGMOD, SIGKDD, and Stanford).
