14th IFIP WG 8.1 Working Conference on the Practice of
Enterprise Modelling (PoEM)
Riga (Latvia), November 2021
Forum Proceedings

Preface

The 14th IFIP WG 8.1 Working Conference on the Practice of Enterprise Modeling (PoEM 2021),
aimed at improving the understanding of the practice of Enterprise Modeling. The special focus in 2021
was on the use of Enterprise Modeling and Enterprise Architecture towards ensuring sustainability and
resilience of enterprises and societies. PoEM 2021 took place during November 24–26, 2021 and was
organized by the Riga Technical University, Latvia. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic it had to be
organized as virtual conference.

    PoEM 2021 Forum
PoEM 2021 Forum continued the tradition of previous editions as a place at the PoEM working
conference of presenting and discussing new ideas, challenges, methods, techniques, and tools relevant
for Enterprise Modeling. The Forum had the aim to be an open platform with a high level of interactivity
between presenters and participants. This was organized as combination of speed talks, digital wall and
discussion sessions. In an initial online session, all accepted Forum papers were briefly introduced in a
2-minute speed talk. On a digital wall, the papers were made available with recorded 10-minute
presentations. Interested researchers had the possibility to watch the presentations, post comments and
get in touch with the authors. An additional interactive session offered the possibility to discuss
individual papers with in plenum or in separate break-out rooms.
In total, we received 13 submissions for the Forum. Based on three reviews by members of the
Program Committee for the Forum, we selected 8 papers (61% acceptance rate). The ninth paper
included in this volume is a summary of the panel discussion that took place at the conference on the
topic of how to build a perfect enterprise modeling method.
During the PoEM Forum a best paper was selected. The decisive factor was the score the paper
received during the review process by the program committee members. The best paper of PoEM 2021
Forum is:
 Digital Optimization in Action: From Models towards an Industrial Application
by Anna Sumereder and Robert Woitsch

Working Session on the Future of Enterprise Modeling
In addition to the paper sessions and panel, PoEM 2021 also included a working session on the
Future of the research area of Enterprise Modeling and Enterprise Architecture organized by Erik Proper
and Janis Stirna. Among the key issues discussed were: 1) the need to establish a series of proceedings
for publishing work stemming from application in practice, such as case studies and experience reports
involving industry representatives; and 2) the need to stimulate the collaboration between various
research groups such as GI EMISA, GI MobIS, AIS, IEEE TCBIS, IFIP WG 8.1 and conferences such
as PoEM, EMMSAD, CBI, and EDOC. To this end a proposal to form a task force on the Enterprise
Modeling and Enterprise Architecture under the auspices of IFIP Working Group 8.1 Design and
Evaluation of Information Systems was put forward. It will be discussed at the next business meeting
of WG 8.1.

  PoEM Best Paper
Also, during the PoEM conference the organizers granted a best paper award to Nikolay Shilov,
Walaa Othman, Michael Fellmann and Kurt Sandkuhl for their paper on Machine Learning-Based
Enterprise Modeling Assistance: Approach and Potentials. The best paper selection process considered
four papers, which received the highest scores by the program committee members. The honorary
mentions are the following papers:
 Enterprise Coherence with GEA -- A 15 Year Co-evolution of Practice and Theory
by Henderik A. Proper, Roel Wagter and Joost Bekel.
 Upper-bounded Model Checking for Declarative Process Models
by Nicolai Schützenmeier, Martin Käppel, Sebastian Petter and Stefan Jablonski.
 A Foundation for Design, Analysis, and Management of Digital Business Ecosystem through
       Situational Method Engineering
by Chen Hsi Tsai and Jelena Zdravkovic.

Last but not least, we thank the PoEM Forum Program Committee and the PoEM 2021 organizing
committee at Riga Technical University for their contributions and hard work.
