Preface of the 30th Italian Symposium on Advanced
Database Systems

   The thirtieth edition of the Italian Symposium on Advanced Database Systems (SEBD - Sistemi
Evoluti per Basi di Dati) was held in Tirrenia (Pisa, Italy) at Grand Hotel Continental from
June 19th to June 22nd 2022. This volume collects the papers selected for presentation at the
conference.
   SEBD is the major annual event of the Italian database research community at large, as it is
thought as a forum for all those in both academia and industry who are interested in database
management and its wide range of applications to meet, discuss, and exchange experiences.
   The topics of SEBD 2022 covered various topics including Data extraction integration visu-
alization, (Big) Data governance, Data for Smart Society, Knowledge ontologies and reasoning
on data, Machine Learning Data Mining, Data analysis, Data clustering partitioning, Query
answering processing, Recommender systems, Ethics fairness of data, Explainable AI.
   The scientific programme of SEBD 2022 was organized into 11 sessions including oral pre-
sentations of 74 papers accepted at the end of a peer-reviewed process. It also included an
invited tutorial given by Franco Maria Nardini (CNR-ISTI) and Salvatore Trani (CNR-ISTI), and
two keynote speeches by Anastasia Ailamaki (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), and
Stéphane Grumbach (INRIA).
   This year, SEBD reached its 30th edition, a remarkable achievement, representing a tangible
trace of the scientific contributions of the Italian database community, its evolution over a long
period of time, and its liveliness.
   To celebrate this achievement, SEBD 2022 introduced the “Taste of Time” Award (TTA)
whose purpose is to recognize seminal contributions and to retrace the history of the Italian
database community by selecting significant papers from past editions of SEBD. This year an
Honorable Mention was given to Giansalvatore Mecca for his paper on “Querying Genome
Databases”, presented at SEBD 1995, and the TTA award was given to Silvana Castano, Valeria
De Antonellis, Maria Grazia Fugini, Barbara Pernici for their paper on “Techniques for the
Analysis of Conceptual Schemas” presented at SEBD 1995.
   We would like to thank all the contributing speakers for making SEBD 2022 a great event, and
we are grateful to the members of our Steering, Program and Organization Committees, as well
as ICT-SUD and Consulta Umbria, for timely providing their support in all of the organizational
and technical aspects.
