Preface

This year’s NLIWoD 7 workshop and QALD 10 challenge with a common focus
on linked data, were held together. NLIWoD is a series of workshops that
emphasizes the advancement of Natural Language (NL) Interfaces to the Web of Data.
It always takes place together with influential semantic web conferences, such
as ISWC and ESWC. Recent advancements and the application of technology
in question answering systems are the main topics covered. At the same time,
QALD is a series of challenges that promote question answering systems over
linked data. Each edition of the QALD challenge publishes new dataset(s), with
particular attention to issues in question answering, such as domain adaption,
multilingualism, hybrid approach, etc.

Next to that, this year’s challenge, QALD 10, posts a question to the semantic
web community, on how to develop a multilingual question answering system over
large-scale linked data and allows participants to get tested on a standardized
benchmark platform. This joint workshop aims to not only push forward the
theoretical research in the retrieval of information from linked data but also to
connect the advancement with industrial practitioners.

In 2022, this workshop comprised one keynote by Prof. Dr. Paul Groth, 3
full papers, and 3 short papers. The best paper award went to Manuel Alejandro
Borroto Santana, Bernardo Cuteri, Francesco Ricca, and Vito Barbara for their
paper ”SPARQL-QA enters the QALD challenge SPARQL-QA enters the QALD
challenge”. Furthermore, we included and presented the results and systems from
the QALD-10 challenge in this workshop proceedings to document the progress
in the field of question answering on Linked Data. We will publish a description
of the actual QALD-10 data later as a resource article.

Keynote - Informing Data Search through Data Practice

This year’s keynote was given by Prof. Dr. Paul Groth. Prof. Dr. Paul Groth
received his Ph. D. in Computer Science from the University of Southampton
in 2007. From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the Intelligent Systems
Division, Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California.
Paul Groth then joined Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Group as a
postdoctoral researcher and then an assistant professor. He remained there
until 2015 when he joined Elsevier Labs as a disruptive technology director. Now
he serves as a full professor at the University of Amsterdam since 2018, where
he leads the Intelligent Data Engineering Lab. Paul’s research interests center
on intelligent systems for the integration and use of diverse information with a
particular emphasis on data provenance.
