1. Introduction

The scientific interests of modern researchers in social communications and information activities
lie at the intersection of computer and information technologies, social sciences, and humanities. Digital
Humanities is the result of implementing joint interdisciplinary research through traditional and
approbation of modified methods. The complexity of research on the systematic use of digital resources
in humanitarian disciplines and their relevance dictate the need to exchange scientific information
between representatives of different scientific schools, establishing partnership relations between
institutions, academic mobility, and scientific collaboration.

These considerations triggered the consolidation of the efforts of scientists from Ukraine, Germany,
Spain. A group of like-minded people formed the Program Committee [
        <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref1">1</xref>
        ], who determined the general
direction of the workshop and selected the submissions included in the workshop proceedings.

SCIA-2022 was called to fulfill a highly relevant scientific and social mission – to institutionalize
Digital Humanities as a direction of theoretical and applied research in Ukraine based on Ukrainian and
foreign experience. The entire complex of humanitarian sciences, which study the theory and practice
of libraries, archives, museums, education, media, jurisprudence, linguistics, and publishing, has
acquired dynamic development thanks to the widespread use of digital technologies. This is the core of
the workshop proceedings.

2. "To be or not to be?" is not a question for SCIA-2022

The idea of holding a scientific event on Digital Humanities was born as a result of many years of
scientific research. It materialized on the eve of a terrible calamity – a full-scale invasion of russian
barbarians on the blessed land of Ukraine. We recall the first responses to invitation letters to members
of the Program Committee with words of sincere support, sympathy, and empathy. At the same time,

colleagues expressed concern about the realities of the war, which could prevent the workshop from
being held.

However, the desire to realize the idea of holding an international event defeated the enemy, who
wanted to break our will for freedom and independence, destroy our national identity, and destroy our
achievements as a democratic and legal country.

Authors from Ukrainian universities, particularly those who actively cooperated with their
colleagues from abroad, prepared manuscripts in the conditions of bombings, sleepless nights in
warehouses, power and communication interruptions, in constant anxiety for relatives and friends,
colleagues, and students.

Twenty-three submissions responded to the call for papers, of which five manuscripts were rejected
due to non-compliance with the requirements and topics of the workshop. In total, 50 participants were
registered by the authors, of which 88% present Ukrainian universities and 12% present universities of
Poland, France, Georgia, Brazil and Canada (Fig. 1).

The main topics of the workshop were Institutional models for digital humanities and Digitization
and digital resources in the humanities. They are represented by research on threats of the
implementation of e-voting, EU digital market, digitization in education, library, archival, and museum
activities. The topics related to Social media (social networks and blogosphere) for digital humanities
and Natural language processing and machine learning aroused considerable interest. The reports on
Information behavior and community engagement, Image processing, media design and data
visualization, Virtual and augmented reality in presenting cultural heritage, Information management
technologies and Open science, open data and scholarly digital resources were interesting and
meaningful (Fig. 2).

The participants of the workshop are scientists from such universities as Lviv Polytechnic National
University, Cherkasy State Technological University, Polytechnique Montréal, Universidade de Sao
Paulo, University of Warmia and Mazury, Ukrainian Academy of Printing, Bordeaux University Law,
Political Science and Economics Library, National Academy of Managerial Staff of Culture and Arts,
National University "Poltava Yuri Kondratyuk Polytechnic", National Aviation University, National
Academy of Public Administration under the President of Ukraine, State Higher Vocational School in
Nowy Sacz, National Transport University and Caucasus University.

The workshop took place online, determined by military actions and the participation of colleagues
from abroad. All reports were listened to with great interest. Lively discussions took place. All video
reports of the presentations are posted on the SCIA YouTube channel [
        <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref2">2</xref>
        ].

SCIA-2022 attracted significant interest from colleagues from Ukrainian and foreign universities
who used digital technologies for libraries, archives, museum funds, media, and education. Colleagues
expressed their readiness to continue scientific research on issues of Digital Humanities.

3. Acknowledgements

Looking back on the long way from the idea to the holding of the workshop, we must admit that
SCIA-2022 is the result of the synergistic cooperation of the Organizing and Program Committees, the
selfless and conscientious work of the reviewers, and the hard work and tirelessness of the authors.

The organizers of SCIA-2022 express their sincere gratitude to the respected members of the
Program Committee, reviewers, and participants for their active support and assistance in holding the
event!

We are grateful to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian soldiers who stood and stand guarding

We are grateful to the partner countries that have shown unprecedented solidarity and support for
the Ukrainian people in their struggle for independence!

We are grateful to the scientific community, which, despite adversity and barriers, shows an
unshakable will to search for true scientific knowledge!
