      <abstract>
        <p>This volume contains the papers presented at the First International Workshop on Geographic Information Extraction from Texts (GeoExT1), held on April 2, 2023, in Dublin, Ireland, as part of the 45th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2023). We received thirteen submissions from authors from ten countries, out of which ifve full papers and two short papers were accepted. Each submission underwent a review process by at least two program committee members. The workshop featured an invited speaker, Ross Purves, who delivered a talk entitled 'Extracting Geographic Information from Text: Blind Alleys and Missing Questions'. We want to acknowledge ECIR for hosting the workshop, our keynote speaker, the program committee, paper authors, and attendees, without whom this event would not have been possible. Additionally, the workshop is accompanied by a special issue2 entitled 'Geographic Information Extraction from Texts' in the Information Processing &amp; Management journal. The special issue provides the authors an opportunity to extend their research papers published in the workshop proceedings. The issue is also open to other researchers working on related topics.</p>
