The Finnish Society for Computer Science aims to bring together everyone who practices computer science in Finland and others interested in the subject nationally and internationally. The society celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023 with the Symposium for Computer Science (In Finnish: Tietojenkäsittelytieteen päivät, TKTP), under the theme of “Interoperable digital technology and society”.

The society was founded in 1982, and it was catalogued in the Register of Associations in 1983. At the time, information technology was beginning to arrive in homes – the Commodore 64 was introduced the same year the society was founded. During the last 40 years, the development of the industry has been wild, and social and ethical aspects must also be considered more and more alongside technical solutions. A big topic of Spring 2023 was ChatGPT and Universities have had to think about their policies on its use in education and research alike, and other organisations have had to think about their position on artificial intelligence. Society’s role as a unifier and information broker of all fields under computer science is essential. Academy professor Esko Ukkonen, a founding member of the society, reviewed “Forty years of computer science – progress, impacts and threats” in his celebratory speech. Other key presentations included ”Intelligence Augmentation and Artificial Intelligence in the Systems of the Future” by Research Director Susanna Pirttikangas and ”Software Trends and Artificial Intelligence are Revolutionising All Business” by Professor Markku Oivo. Industry talks were given about the future of software development in the automotive sector (Elektrobit), about artificial intelligence from the perspective of the application company (Antell), and about bringing data analytics to practical teaching (SAS).

In the celebratory year, the society revived the tradition for its research symposium with properly peerreviewed publications to get a timely view on international and national research topics currently relevant in the field of computer science and its sub-disciplines. For that, an international program committee was formed, also with broad representation across Finnish universities involving computer science. The open call for papers attracted 24 submissions, of which 14 were selected to be presented in the symposium and included in the proceedings (acceptance rate 58,3 %). In addition to Finland, submissions were received from researchers resided in Ethiopia, Germany, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Sweden. Each submission got at least two reviews. Due to the international nature of several researchers resided in Finland and the international participants, the working language of the symposium and the proceedings was English. The symposium was well received, attracting ca. 50 active researchers on-site, and the society will most definitely continue this tradition to enhance interactions with Finnish and international communities of computer science researchers also in the coming years.
