The Italian Conference on Big Data and Data Science (ITADATA) is the annual event supported by the CINI National Laboratory on Data Science that puts together Italian researchers and professionals from academia, industry, government, and public administration working in the field of big data and data science, as well as related fields such as security and privacy, HPC, Cloud. ITADATA aims to discuss and shape the future of Big Data and Data Science in Italy and abroad, considering the multidisciplinary, complex, heterogeneous, and data-centric environment where modern distributed systems are operating. The ability to timely manage and analyze large amounts of data, and to guarantee low-latency access to the data themselves increasingly become critical requirements and are at the heart of modern business processes. In this context, data science, as the foundation of today's data-driven society, plays the role of developing and defining all the technologies needed to support construction of value on data in multidisciplinary areas at increasing complexity. ITADATA covers theoretical and practical research and application pertaining to data, from data governance to data processing and analysis. It also covers research and application in related domains where data and data science technologies are key, such as cloud, edge and IoT, intelligent and high performance computing, blockchain, security and privacy, assurance and certification. It finally considers and analyzes the evolution of big data and data science at EU and national level, trying to map current activities in the context of data spaces and relevant organizations/associations such as for instance the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), GAIA-X and FiWARE, as well as policy development, laws, and regulations. ITADATA 2023 is the second edition of the conference, hosted by Università degli Studi di Napoli “Parthenope” in the stunning location of Villa Doria d'Angri. The conference is structured into a main research track on Big Data and Data Science, a presentation track providing visionary and work in progress ideas, and 5 tutorials on specific verticals. For the first time this year, the conference hosts a special track on Big Data and High-Performance Computing (BigHPC2023) organized by the CINI National Laboratory on High-Performance Computing, Key Technologies, and Tools. ITADATA 2023 also hosts four outstanding keynote speakers (Prof. Roberto Tagliaferri, Dr. Francesco Bonfiglio, Prof. Ernesto Damiani, and Dr. Antonio Maratea), and two international panels. ITADATA 2023 attracted submissions from national and international researchers. More specifically, there were 32 peerreviewed submissions to the conference, out of which 15 were finally accepted as full papers in the proceedings, plus one extension coming from the BigHPC2023 track. ITADATA 2023 was made possible by the efort of many volunteers ( https://www.itadata.it/2023/committees) who dedicated time and energy to the success of the conference. We would like to thank them all as well as the program committee members for their efort in reading, reviewing, and selecting the papers.
