Preface

The 35th Workshop ”Grundlagen von Datenbanken” (”Foundations of Database Systems”)
took place at Ringhotel Zweibrücker Hof Herdecke (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) from 22
May to 24 May 2024 with 31 participants. This workshop is organized annually since 1989 by
the GI Working Group ”Foundations of Information Systems” in the GI Section ”Databases and
Information Systems” (DBIS) and has offered young scientists a platform for the exchange of
their research approaches. This year’s workshop was organized by the Chair of ”Databases
and Information Systems” at the University of Hagen. A total of 14 scientific contributions
from Germany and Austria were selected through a review process and presented by the
authors at the workshop.

The program was rounded off with two keynotes. Heiko Schuldt from the University of Basel
(Switzerland) presented the first keynote: “It’s All So Different: How to Deal with Multiple Data
Models, Media Types, and Modalities in Big Data Management and Retrieval” and covered an
overview of the various challenges of data management in the age of big data. He presented
selected big data projects of the Databases and Information Systems Research Group at the
University of Basel that address these challenges. Jan Nidzwetzki gave the second keynote
entitled “Handling Time-Series Data in a Relational DBMS: Challenges and Solutions”. He
discussed the challenges that time series data pose for DBMS, as the system needs to
continuously be able to insert new data without blocking due to parallel running queries or
maintenance operations.

In addition to the scientific contributions mentioned above, there was a walk through
Herdecke and along the Ruhr. The workshop was financially supported by the GI Section
“Databases and Information Systems”. We are very grateful for this. Further thanks go to the
entire team of the Chair of “Databases and Information Systems”, who supported us
significantly in the organization of the workshop. We also thank the reviewers for their
constructive comments.
