Preface Achieving a shared understanding of complex domains is a challenge targeted by the interdisciplinary field of Ontology providing conceptual tools and theories to ground modelling decisions. In recent years, we have noticed a growing interest in the application of ontologies to solve modeling and classification problems in several areas, such as Computer Science, Information Science, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Knowledge Management, Semantic Web, and others. The Seminar on Ontology Research in Brazil (ONTOBRAS) has established itself as a hub for intellectual exchange on theories, methodologies, languages, tools, and experiences related to ontology, bringing together academia and industry to explore the frontiers of ontology development and application cultivating professional growth. It provides a rich environment for young researchers to engage with seasoned experts from Brazil and from abroad and to present their proposals in the dedicated track Doctoral and Masters Consortium on Ontologies (WTDO). Now in its 17th edition, ONTOBRAS 2024 is widely regarded by the Brazilian ontology community as a unique and high-quality venue for presenting and debating ontological research and application cases. Complementing this tradition, the 8th WTDO has consolidated its role in contributing to the expansion and renewal of the community of ontology researchers in Brazil. In the main track, eight papers were accepted as full papers (well-evaluated papers describing research with clearly demonstrated results), eight as short papers (well-evaluated papers describing ongoing work), and three works were accepted as posters. In WTDO, nine submissions describing ongoing master’s project research were selected. All submissions were reviewed by at least three members of the program committee, which is composed of national and international experts in the field. Beyond the technical sessions presenting the accepted papers, the program included four tutorials and four keynote speakers: Anthony Galton (“Metaphysics – Ontology – ©️ 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Parente (“The Role of Ontologies in Data Integration”), Patrícia Ferreira da Silva (“How are sausages made” Ontology-Based Applications in Real Cases from the Oil & Gas Industry”), and John Beverley (“Tracing space in time”). We thank the Organizing Committee for their commitment to the success of the event, the Program Committee for their hard work, the Steering Committee for their support, the authors for their submissions, the keynote speakers and tutorialists for sharing knowledge, and the participants for their presence and participation.
