The 36th Workshop on Foundations of Database Systems took place in Regensburg (Bavaria, Germany) from September 29 to October 1, 2025, and brought together 26 researchers working in the fields databases, data engineering and information retrieval. This year’s workshop was hosted by the Data Engineering Group of the University of Regensburg. The workshop Foundations of Database Systems is the most traditional workshop of the database community in Germany. Since 1989, this annual event has been organized by the GI working group Foundations of Information Systems within the GI special interest group Databases and Information Systems (DBIS). The workshop primarily aims to provide a platform for young researchers to exchange ideas and discuss their work.
In this year, a total of 13 scientific contributions from Germany and Austria has been selected through a peer-review process. Each submission has been reviewed by two program committee members. The authors of the accepted papers presented their work during the workshop and could discuss their research with the workshop audience.
The program was enriched by a keynote given by Lisa Ehrlinger (Hasso Plattner Institute) entitled “Data Quality Assessment – Challenges and Solutions”, in which she provided an overview of different data quality issues and its importance in data engineering processes. Johannes Schildgen offered a seminar on “Presentation Skills for Scientists”, in which he shared own experiences and best practices how to present scientific results. The workshop took place in the city center of Regensburg. A guided city tour of Regensburg complemented the scientific program and allowed participants to explore the cultural heritage of the host city.
