      </title-group>
      <abstract>
        <p>European and national initiatives, e.g. the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) and the Deutsche Grid-Initiative (D-Grid), have stimulated the dissemination of grid computing both in the academic and the operational area. Regardless of the particular field of research, these grid projects typically require the processing of large amounts of data to be coordinated. Moreover, they often involve the integration of various scientific applications with their specific input and output formats. Finally, a complete documentation of data provenance has to be maintained in order to ensure scientific reproducibility. All these requirements, common to grid projects in applied and fundamental research of all faculties, namely natural sciences, life sciences, human sciences an well as business administration and logistics are met with a sophisticated workflow management. In the recent years, the Grid Workflow Workshop, originally initiated and organized by colleagues from the Betriebliche Informationssysteme (BIS) Grid project, has served as a forum with current contributions on workflows topics. In 2011, members of the Molecular Simulation Grid (MoSGrid) project organized the meeting. The Grid Workflow Workshop 2011 (GWW 2011) was held on March 4, 2011 at the University of Cologne under the motto Scientific Workflows: From data aquisition to long-term archiving. The talks were recorded and made available on the Sustainable Grid Infrastructure (SuGI) e-Learning portal.</p>
