                     Foreword to CASE’89 Proceedings
                       republished at CEUR-WS.org
The first Conference on Advanced Systems Engineering, CASE’89, was arranged during May 9 – 11,
1989 jointly by SISU (Swedish Institute for Systems Development) and SSI (Swedish Society for
Information Processing). The conference was also supported by the research laboratory SYSLAB and
DSV – the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences at Royal Institute of Technology and
Stockholm University. In fact the conference was called “The First Nordic Conference …” as our
initial aim was to anchor this as a Nordic event.

The aim of CASE’89 was to bridge the gap between theory and practice in systems development.
Consequently, CASE’89 was organised in two parallel streams, one more theoretical and one more
practical. The theoretical track was traditionally organised by submitted, peer-reviewed, and accepted
papers, primarily authored by researchers. The practical track consisted mainly of invited talks from
business, industry and the public sector. General conference co-chairpersons were Agneta Qwerin,
Swedish Society for Information Processing, and Janis Bubenko jr, SISU & DSV. The executive
Program Committee consisted of Björn Nilsson, SISU, chairman, Håkan Dahl, Christer Dahlgren,
Kurt Gladh, Lars Swärd, and Örjan Odelhög. The Organising Committee was chaired by Lars
Bergman, SISU.

CASE’89 turned out to be a great success. A large number of contributed papers and international
delegates could be noted. 43 papers were presented. The number of attending delegates was about 180.
This gave us the idea to continue the CASE conference in a more international setting. The name of
the 1990 conference was, however, changed to CAiSE (Conference on Advanced information Systems
Engineering) in order not to be mixed up with another conference. CAiSE’90 was also arranged at
Electrum, Kista, by SISU and supported by DSV. The general chair was Arne Sølvberg, the program
chair Bo Steinholtz, and the organising chair was Lars Bergman. All three were also editors of the first
Springer Verlag (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) publication of the CAiSE’90 proceedings.
CAiSE’90 was attended by about 200 delegates from more than 20 countries. Considerable interest
was expressed by European colleagues to continue CAiSE on a European scale. Janis Bubenko jr and
Arne Sølvberg decided to support this challenge and worked out a few simple rules for CAiSE. Simply
speaking, CAiSE is a conference with almost no rules. It has a steering committee that essentially
consists of chairs of earlier organised conferences. Each year the organising body of CAiSE is
responsible for the finances, profits as well as losses. About every fifth year it is expected that CAiSE
returns to a Nordic country. CAiSE is guided by an advisory committee consisting of Colette Rolland,
Janis Bubenko jr, and Arne Sølvberg.

Since its start in 1989 and 1990, CAiSE has been hosted in Norway, France, U.K., the Netherlands,
Finland, Greece, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Austria, Latvia, Portugal,
Luxembourg, Tunisia and Poland. The 25th event of CAiSE will be held in Valencia, 2013. All CAiSE
proceedings, since 1990, have been published by Springer Verlag, Lecture Notes in Computer
Science.

Another interesting effect of CAiSE is its regular set of about ten tutorials and workshops, normally
arranged during two days preceding the conference itself. Some well-known working conferences,
such as EMMSAD and BPMDS are jointly arranged with CAiSE.

CASE’89 proceedings were originally produced by SISU by photocopying the papers as submitted by
the authors. By this CEUR-WS.org publication of CASE 1989 all CAiSE conference proceedings are
now available to interested readers.

The following is a letter to colleagues written by Janis A Bubenko jr and Arne Sølvberg in 1990.

Dear colleague,

The CAiSE conferences have been arranged in 1989 and 1990 in Stockholm, and will be arranged next
time May 13-15, 1991, in Trondheim, Norway. Among the most important objectives of the
conferences has been to provide a forum for the exchange of experience, research results, ideas and
prototypes between the research community and industry, in the field of information systems
engineering.

When we arranged for the first CAiSE conferences to be held in Stockholm and Trondheim, our
intention was to create an annual Scandinavian conference. After discussions with colleagues we have
become convinced that we should use the CAiSE initiative as a platform for a truly international
conference, to be arranged also in other countries than in Scandinavia.

In this way we intend to contribute to creating an annual meeting place and a focal point for
Information Systems Engineers and Researchers from all over the world. It seems to us that there is a
need for such a meeting place in the field of Information Systems Engineering. Other conferences, like
VLDB and the IFIP TC8 working conferences, satisfy this need only partially.

Both of us have been deeply involved in VLDB as well as in IFIP TC8 for many years. We should
certainly like to view our initiative as supplement to ongoing VLDB and IFIP activities. VLDB is very
successful in the database field. The IFIP TC8 conferences are profiled towards particular subjects of
relevant and timely research, one restricted profile for each conference. The planned CAiSE
conferences are intended to be annual events, based on a combination of submitted papers and
tutorials/invited presentations, and run in a normal, open-conference fashion, with a scientific scope
which is fairly similar from year to year.

The success of our initiative depends on the positive interest of the international research community,
of its willingness to submit papers, and to of its interest in participating in the conference. Through
this letter we want to solicit your opinion on our initiative. You are a distinguished member of the
Information Systems research community. Your active interest and participation is therefore much
needed in order to make future CAiSE conferences successful. Your opinion is important when
decisions about future CAiSE conferences shall be made.

Preliminary plans for a 1992 conference have been made to arrange it in the U.K. (Peri Loucopoulos,
Keith Jeffery). We have also had indications of interest from Holland (Eckhard Falkenberg) and
France (Colette Rolland).

Please note that the deadline for submissions to CAiSE'90 is November 30, 1990. We look forward to
have your active participation in Trondheim May 13-15, 1991. We solicit your views on future CAiSE
conferences.

Sincerely yours,

Janis A. Bubenko jr. and Arne Sølvberg
